Making a needle case from scrap fabric

29/06/2023

Photographic tutorial on how to make a simple needle case using scrap fabric.

Materials you will need:

Equipment you will need:

Step 1 - Measure two rectangles on your sheet of paper.  Remember they are going to be folded in half. Perhaps measure your needles to make sure they will fit on the smaller rectangle.

Cut them out using your paper scissors.

Step 2 - Using your paper pattern draw out the larger rectangle pattern onto two pieces of scrap fabric.

Cut out your fabric using your fabric scissors.

Step 3Take your piece of ribbon and fold in half.

Take one of your rectangles and with the right side facing up pin your ribbon in place as shown half way down a short side.

Step 4 - Now take the second rectangle of fabric and lay it right side facing down onto the top of the first rectangle and pin int place.

Mark the position of a gap which will enable you to turn the fabric right side out after sewing around the edges.

Step 5With your sewing machine and a seam allowance of 7mm, sew a seam started at one side of the opening all around the outside of your square and finish at the other side of the opening mark. Remember to double-stitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

Step 6Snip each corner and using your pinking shears trip around the edges.

Step 7 - Turn your needle case right side out through the gap and press.

Step 8Top stitch your needle case close to the edge all the way around. This finishes off the needle case outer part and closes up the gap in the seam at the same time.

Step 9  -  Draw around the 10cm paper square onto a piece of scrap felt. And cut it out using your pinking shears.

Step 10 - Lay on top of your fabric square in the centre and pin.

Step 11 Sew a seam right down the center to attached the felt to the fabric square. You will need to measure and mark the centre before sewing.

Step 12  -  Fold in half. Fold over ribbon loop and mark the button position.

Sew on a button.
